Amish Country

Me and my traveling companions. Punda (Caroline Ackerman, Judith Jennings, and Susan. We are sitting at Java Jo's, a nice little coffee shop right in the middle of downtown Berlin. Good coffee, baked oatmeal for breakfast, fun sandwiches and salads, and a billiards room in the back. But the best thing is they have wireless. Our cabin just minutes outside of downtown Berlin.
We were driving when I took this so it is not the best angle, but interesting none the less.
View across the valley from out cabin, I was testing my new camera and it's zoom on this trip.
A couple of Buggies outside the bulk food store in New Hope.
Again taken from the car, not the best picture, but at least I got the blur out.

Thoughts to Ponder

Ponderisms

Can you cry under water?

How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?

Why do you have to "put your two cents in" . . But it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to?

Once you're in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity?

Why does a round pizza come in a square box?

What disease did cured ham actually have?

How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?

Why is it that people say they "slept like a baby" when babies wake up like every two hours?

If a deaf person has to go to court, is it still called a hearing?

Why are you IN a movie, but you're ON TV?

Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?

Why do doctors leave the room while you change? They're going to see you naked anyway .

Why is "bra" singular and "panties" plural?

Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a horrible crisp, which no decent human being would eat?

If Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is there a stupid song about him?

Can a hearse carrying a corpse drive in the carpool lane ?

If the professor on Gilligan's Island can make a radio out of a coconut, why can't he fix a hole in a boat?

Why does Goofy stand erect while Pluto remains on all fours? They're both dogs!

If Wile E . Coyote had enough money to buy all that ACME crap, why didn't he just buy dinner?

If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what is baby oil made from?

If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from morons?

Do the Alphabet song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star have the same tune?

Why did you just try singing the two songs above?

Why do they call it an asteroid when it's outside the hemisphere, but call it a hemorrhoid when it's in your butt?

Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog's face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him for a car ride, he sticks his head out the window?

The Kite Runner

This movie is a must see! "The Kite Runner""There is a way to be good again."
Based on one of the most acclaimed novels in recent memory, THE KITE RUNNER is a profoundly emotional tale of friendship, family, devastating mistakes and redeeming love. In a divided country on the verge of war, two childhood friends, Amir and Hassan, are about to be torn apart forever. It's a glorious afternoon in Kabul and the skies are bursting with the exhilarating foy of a kite-fighting tournament. But in the aftermath of the day's victory, one boy's fearful act of betrayal will mark their lives forever and set in motion an epic quest for redemption. Now, after 20 years of living in America, Amir returns to a perilous Afghanistan under the Taliban's iron-fisted rule to face the secrets that still haunt him and take one last daring chance to set things sight...

If this movie doesn't win an Academy Award I will be very surprised. Go out and see this movie, take tissues, I guarantee you will be moved!

Random Houses

Ran home to Shelby on Thursday and came back this morning. The drive back was nostalgic, most of the route back has changed into 4 lane except for the section of 224 that goes through Decatur In. It is a county seat and of course like all these little court house towns also has a very nice old court house in the center of town. This house I had seen many time in the past and thought it was in better condition. Even though it is run down the potential is limitless. Too bad it is in the middle of nowhere. In Shelby there are a number of houses up for sale. This one is behind my parents and it has been redone on the out side.
Both of these houses are on Grand Blvd. the place in Shelby to live in it's day. This house used to be totally run down with a huge pice tree in the front yard that completely hid the house. I would love to see the inside.
This house is the one that I am going to look at next week. $180,000 4 apartments with a 5 car garage in the back. There are a lot things that are up in the air. My brother may be open to managing it for me. The rent on the apts. is $625, is it worth the investment?

History

Yesterday, I walked to the public library and did some reading on the history of Anderson. In one of the books I ran across the mention of this house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. For some reason I doubt that the green trim is an original color, but who knows. One other thing that I learned about Anderson was the gas boom that occurred in the late 1800's. Natural gas fields were discovered in central Indiana and Ohio. The gas seems to have been discovered because of the practice of early settlers to drill for salt water. Natural gas was then used for heating and lighting in the city. At one point they even piped it into the White River and lit up the river. How bazaar is that?

Presidential Potential

From CNN here are the results of the top 6 candidates. It has been interesting to be back in the states while this is all going on. Now I'm not very opinionated when it comes to politics but I do have some ideas about this election. I think John Edwards would make a good president, too bad he is not getting lots of press. He looks more like a president, I don't think America is ready for a woman or a black president. Maybe I have just been gone too long to really understand the feeling of most Americans. And I don't consider myself to be a bigot or prejudiced, but I heard a newscaster talking about presidential names, and he was saying most of these front runners don't have presidential sounding names. I don't think America is ready for a president whose middle name is Hussein. Am I wrong? I am surprised no one has brought it up. Barack Hussein Obama.

On the republican side, is there a good candidate? Huckabee, an ordained minister, I think that he has had to deal with tough questions just because he is a pastor, and he comes out sounding good. Bust sadly to say I think America will also have time backing an evangelical minister. How sad. So for right now I'm hoping that Edwards will make some inroads.

Exporing Anderson

I spent the morning walking through the historic districts of Anderson trying to see if there were any interesting properties on the market. The only problem with Anderson is that the economy seems to be really pretty depressed.

Interesting old house on Historic 8th st.

Below are 3 properties up for sale. Possibilities???

Get F.I.T.

This mornings message, started with the idea of how we realize our goals, our resolutions for this new year.
  • "Bummed about that gut? Wish you had rock-hard abs? Look...I'm gonna be honest...Unless you are under the age of 23, or a professional football player... it's probably not gonna happen. If I were you I'd just buy some bigger shirts."
Peyton Manning

Using this to think about our goals, there are 5 things that we should keep in mind, to help realize them.
  1. Make it positive.
  2. Be realistic.
  3. Picture it.
  4. Do not, do it alone.
  5. Give it 30 days.
The main scripture reference for the message was from Hebrews 12: 1-3
This weeks message was titled Get F.I.T. -- Get Free.
And how do we do this:
  • Be encouraged
  • Be proactive
  • Be together
  • Be biblical
  • Be focused

Small Town Indiana

This is the Clay Terrace Mall. This kind of open mall seems to be the trend now in the states, come to think about it, it really does have the feel of a downtown and even the clerks at the stores seemed to be more friendly.

This is the court house in Noblesville.

And in the square right next to the court house, this beautiful old house.

Sunday Afternoon

Today I decided to go to church in Indy at Church at the Crossing, and I'm glad I did. As I entered the sanctuary I almost ran into the pastor, and old friend, Steve Renick. We both did a double take and I got a big hug. The worship was very nice and was blended with both hymns and choruses that I was familiar with which was a blessing. Susan had told me that it would be a good place to go and that some other old friends attended the 9:30 service. So how nice that after the service I did find Will and Patsy Kline. I got to spend a few minutes talking with them and I think this has helped me decide that even though it may be far I think this is where I am going to attend.

On the way home I decided to swing through Carmel. There was another Dicks that I wanted to go and see if I could find the compression pants that I had been looking for. Sure enough they had them and it seemed this store was a lot nicer than the other branches that I had been too. In fact the the whole complex that it was in was so nice. The area is called Clay Terrace Mall. It is like they have built a little downtown area out in the suburbs. It had a nice feel very conducive to shopping, so naturally I ended up buying more than the pants. Pick up some shoes a wall sconce @ Pier 1, and a sweater at Eddie Bauer. Lunch was at Qdoba, a Mexican fast food place that was really nice. Between Carmel and Anderson is a Nobelsville which is a quaint little town that I have never been to. Below is the county court house. And the square was full of nice little shops, that were still in business. I think I will explore the city some more while I'm back.

Home

So this is my home while I'm in the states. I'm in the building on the left in the back. As you can see we have had some snow, it has been snowing off and on the last 2 days. There is not a lot of snow but enough to make it pretty. The downside of all of this is that we have had a cold snap from yesterday. This morning I was talking to Shige when I checked the temperature. This morning it is 5°, I told him that and he said, "oh the same as here, then I reminded him that this was F, in C in is -15°. Needless to say it is really cold!

I have started reading ホームレス中学生 (Homeless Jr. High student), it is not to difficult and I think if I go slow I will be able to get through it.
Yesterday I went to "Charlie Wilson's War" it was pretty good, but a little fast moving in the dialog area. I guess it just really shows that I'm not used to keeping up on conversations. Hopefully that is something that I will be working on while I'm here.
